A fibroscan is a specialized ultrasound machine used to diagnose liver diseases. It assesses liver fibrosis and steatosis (fatty change). Ultrasound elastography is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows doctors to determine the amount of scar tissue and fatty tissue in the liver. It is a non-invasive procedure (a patient can return home immediately after the scan, as no incision is made). Furthermore, because Fibroscan is quick and reliable, it is particularly useful as an alternative to liver biopsy. A Fibroscan machine works similarly to an ultrasound; a small handheld probe is placed on the patient's lower right ribcage. After that, the probe sends a shear wave into the patient's body. With a screen attached to it, the machine records the waves reflected off the patient's liver and calculates the amount of scar tissue present in the liver.
