A tiny telescope called a ureteroscope is sent through the urethra and bladder and up the ureter to the point where the stone is placed during ureteroscopy, a treatment used to treat kidney stones. The surgery normally takes one to three hours to complete and is usually done while the patient is under general anesthesia. Smaller stones may often be caught with a basket device and taken out of the ureter whole. The stone will need to be broken up, which is often done using a laser, if it is big or if the ureter's diameter is small. These fragments are taken out after the stone has been split into tiny bits. The ureter may enlarge as a result of the ureteroscope's passage. To ensure that the kidney drains urine effectively, it may be essential to temporarily leave a tiny tube known as a ureteral stent inside the ureter. Ureteroscopy is often an outpatient procedure, but if it takes a long time or is problematic, patients might need to spend the night in the hospital.
