Breast tissue swelling during the menstrual cycle is linked to the most prevalent type of breast pain. Almost always, it's hormonal. Some young women experience pain that starts around ovulation and lasts through the start of their menstrual cycle. One breast may experience the pain exclusively, or it may radiate to the underarm area. A fluid-filled sac known as a cyst forms in the breast tissue. Though occasionally discovered in teenagers, they typically affect older women. Just before the menstrual cycle, cysts frequently expand, get uncomfortable and unpleasant, and can even appear suddenly. Cysts can be firm or soft to the touch. Cysts can feel like a big blister that is smooth on the exterior but packed with fluid on the inside when they are close to the surface of the breast. A cyst will feel like a hard lump when it is deeply implanted in breast tissue because it is coated in tissue.
