It evaluates fibrosis and steatosis in the liver (fatty change). Ultrasound elastography is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows doctors to determine how much scar tissue and fatty tissue is present in the liver. It is a painless procedure (a patient can return home immediately after the scan, as no incision is made). Furthermore, because Fibroscan is quick and accurate, it is an excellent alternative to a liver biopsy. A Fibroscan machine operates in the same way that an ultrasound machine does; a small handheld probe is placed on the patient's lower right ribcage. The probe then sends a shear wave into the patient's body. The machine, which has a screen attached to it, records the waves reflected off the patient's liver and calculates the amount of scar tissue present.
