An anal fissure is a small tear in the thin, moist tissue (mucous membrane) that lines the anus. An anal fissure can develop when you have hard or thick stools when you have a bowel movement. Anal fissures usually cause pain and bleeding with a bowel movement. You may also experience spasms in the ring of muscle at the end of your anus (anal sphincter).
